National Health Education Standards (2004)

The student will

  1. Comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
  2. Analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behaviors.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to access valid information, products, and services to enhance health.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to use decision-making skills to enhance health.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting skills to enhance health.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and avoid or reduce health risks.
  8. Demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family and community health.

  1. Tobacco use

  2. Dietary patterns leading to disease

  3. Sedentary lifestyles

  4. Sexual behaviors

  5. Alcohol and other drug use

Consumer and Community Health Selecting good sources of health information, consumer rights, advertisements, wise decisions about health care providers, health advocacy, health careers
Environmental Health Environmental issues (local & nation), air & water pollution, conservation techniques, natural environment, advocating for safe environment
Injury Prevention and Safety Safety precautions that reduce risk of unintentional injuries, prevention of intentional injuries, bike & motor vehicle safety, bus safety, respecting authority & laws governing safety, avoiding gangs, first aid & CPR procedures.
